What to Do After a Loss

  1. Make Safety Your First Priority
    • If anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger, contact emergency services first.
    • Do not enter an unsafe building or put yourself at risk to inspect damage.
  2. Prevent Additional Damage When Possible
    • If it is safe to do so, take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage to your property.
    • This might include temporarily covering a damaged roof, shutting off water following a leak or moving undamaged property away from an affected area.
    • Avoid permanent repairs until you’ve spoken with your insurance carrier unless immediate repairs are necessary for safety or to prevent additional damage.
  3. Document the Damage
    • Take photographs or video of the damage before cleanup or repairs whenever it is safe and practical to do so.
    • Document damaged property and keep receipts for reasonable emergency expenses and temporary repairs.
  4. Locate Your Policy Information
    • Having your insurance company name and policy number available can make reporting your claim easier.
  5. Contact Your Insurance Carrier
    • Report the loss to your insurance company’s claims department as soon as reasonably possible.
    • Your carrier will provide instructions regarding the next steps and may assign an adjuster to your claim.

Information You May Need

When reporting a claim, it can be helpful to have:

  • Your policy number
  • Your contact information
  • The date and approximate time of the loss
  • The location where the loss occurred
  • A description of what happened
  • Photos or videos of the damage, if available
  • Information about damaged property
  • Police, fire or accident reports, when applicable
  • Receipts for emergency expenses or temporary repairs

Don’t delay reporting a claim simply because you don’t have every piece of information available. Your insurance carrier can explain what additional documentation may be needed.

Need to Report a Claim?

Insurance claims are generally reported directly to the insurance company that issued your policy.

Your insurance carrier’s claims department will assign and manage your claim, investigate the loss and determine coverage according to the terms and conditions of your policy.

After a Hurricane or Major Storm

Following a hurricane or widespread weather event, insurance companies may experience unusually high claim volumes.

Document your damage, protect the property from additional damage when it is safe to do so, keep receipts and report your claim to your insurance carrier.

Be cautious when signing contracts or assigning insurance benefits to contractors or other third parties before you understand what you are agreeing to.

Questions About the Claims Process?

Your insurance carrier is responsible for investigating, adjusting and making coverage decisions regarding your claim.

Quality Insurance Group can help you locate your carrier’s claims information, understand general next steps and identify the appropriate contact for your policy.
